I agree that this country needs a new direction. The binge spending of the Bush administration needed to end. Unfortunately, instead of changing course toward responsible, limited government we decided to elect Obama the collectivist (socialist or Marxist works too.) Sure, most voters didn’t actually know he was a collectivist, or even what a collectivist is, but that doesn’t matter much now.
There is nothing noble about Obama’s change. In fact, giving away other people’s money is immoral in my opinion. It’s easy to get selfish people to vote for you when you promise to give them stuff that they don’t have to work for.
Obama is going to spoil America with his collectivist policies. Universal healthcare will probably be the most devastating one. The worst so far is the stimulus package which is closely followed by the innumerable bailouts.
Why doesn’t America realize that collectivism means less prosperity for everyone? If the government dictates that we all earn the same wage, will you still be motivated to work harder or improve your education? Would you take a risk and expand your small business if the government took 75% of your income? If you couldn’t make millions by inventing a new drug would you risk millions trying to develop one? Those examples may sound extreme now but that is exactly the direction we are headed with President Obama at the wheel.
I think most Americans need to take a lesson in economics. The idea that profits are bad is ridiculous. Profits = Incentive to produce and production is the engine of our economy. If profits get too large then other competitors will enter the market and prices will come down… assuming the government doesn’t meddle too much like it does in the oil industry. Keynesian economists will tell you that consumption drives an economy; I disagree. Production is what truly drives the economy. It is common sense that you cannot consume until you produce. The government should encourage production through low taxes (and low spending) which will encourage individuals to start or expand businesses because they will get to keep more of the money they earn. Those new and expanded businesses will employ more people which will increase consumption. This is basic supply-side economics! Encourage production and the consumption will naturally follow. Once you understand this it is clear that the government can’t stimulate the economy because it doesn’t produce anything! For the government to spend money it must first either tax, borrow, or inflate and all those things take money away from the productive part of the economy!
Failed economic theory is just one reason why Obama’s stimulus package is doomed to fail. There will be some stimulation but it will end when the government money runs out and the inflation takes off. Yes, I hope you’re ready for 1970’s style inflation or worse. The Federal Reserve is printing money to finance Obama’s stimulus package which means your dollars are worth less. Inflation is a tax on EVERYONE. Obama’s policies are the definition of UNSUSTAINABLE.
Unfortunately, there is a problem with a production driven economy. It thrives best under LIMITED GOVERNMENT which require personal responsibility and honest politicians. It is a lot easier to get elected by promising people free stuff and no more worries than it is to say that everyone has to work hard and feed themselves. That is why we’ve seen this downward spiral into collectivism every since the early 20th century (thanks to Wilson and FDR.)
This is all common sense, right? We all know that if a parent gives their child whatever they want then they end up with a spoiled brat. A good parent teaches their child to be self sufficient and strive for success. It is better to let a child learn and grow from their mistakes than to shield them from the realities of this world. Preventing failure is a sure way to prevent success.
America needs some tough love. We need a president who will remind us that government dependence is the same as stealing from your neighbor. We need a president who will be a real leader and preserve liberty instead of taking the easy way out.
Collectivism is kind of like a tee-ball league. Everyone gets to hit the ball and run the bases but nobody actually wins. America used to be a country of winners. Obama wants to change us into a bunch of needy wimps because more people dependent on a large government = enormous power.
I agree that everyone needs to take an economics class. Everyone – especially people in the media.
What is also unfortunate is that of late, rich = bad. In general, I hear absurd justifications – for example, recently CNN Money had an article about how Geithner couldn’t sell his home and might have to take a loss on it. The article concluded along the lines of – “you don’t have to feel bad for him – he makes ~200k”. Now what, if you make money, it’s ok to take a loss on your investments?
Oh well, I hope people wake up before it’s too late.

Sir, you have correctly identified the cancer in this society and that is collectivism, the undeniable anti-thesis to the principals of our founding and any free society (IE one in which the collective is NOT supreme to the individual).
It is similar to the common misconception among 99% of the populace that America is a democracy, it is not, it is (was) a Constitutional Republic. The Founders unanimously despised democracy for it almost certainly leads to some form of collectivism. For instance, in a democracy 51% of the people could vote away the 2nd Amendment rights of the other 49%. Not so in a Constitutional Republic, 99% could not vote away the rights or property of 1% because the individual, not the collective, is supreme. This is (was) the essence of the American experiment; inalienable (not to be taken away by anyone, not even a collective majority) individual rights to life, liberty, and property. Ben Franklin put it well when he said democracy is nothing more than two wolves and sheep deciding what is for dinner. He later added, that in a Constitutional Republic the sheep would have a gun.
And Collectivism is the correct term, you can’t just blame it on the mainstream Orwellian political labels because they are vague and meaningless. Disagreeing with a something because it is Red/Blue, Demopublican/Republicrat, left/right, can literally mean anything to anyone. Specifically identifying the faulty concepts such as collectivism, help to cut through the fog.

The fact is, there are just too many people on the receiving end of government handouts. How will you change anyone’s minds that there should be less government involvement when there are so many people that “benefit” from the government having its hands in the cookie jar? Lazy parents aren’t going to raise hard-working kids. The cycle will just continue. You can write about it and complain about it, but the only people that are going to listen are the people who already think the same way you do. What are YOU going to do to bring about change? Are you going to volunteer to work with next generation youth and start up a program that teaches them to be responsible, hard-working individuals who won’t suck off the government? Are you going to work with adults to educate them in how to manage their finances? Or are you going to just sit here and write about how “bad” everything is? It is easy to sit and complain. It’s harder to get out there and actually bring about change.

You’re right I should get directly involved. Unfortunately, I work 45+ hours a week so its hard to find time to get deeply involved. Heck, I haven’t even posted for 3 weeks.
I have plans to get more involved. This is just the first step.
I guess the point of this blog is to express my opinion without having to get into political discussions with people directly. It isn’t easy to talk politics face-to-face so this gives me a way to vent without offending people… as much
I hope people reading this blog realize that America was founded on freedom and the best solutions to all our problems is freedom.
For example, we have a problem with healthcare costs. The reason is that there is not enough freedom in the marketplace. I can’t buy insurance and deduct it from my taxes, but my employer can. The solution is deregulation and more accountability.
Where does heavy regulation work? It has driven up energy prices. It has crippled the American auto industry. It helped create the housing boom/bust.
Free markets always produce the highest quality product at the lowest sustainable price. Note the word *sustainable*. Government can artificially and temporarily lower prices but it can’t last forever and the consequences are always painful.
Freedom is always the answer. Let everyone take care of themselves and they will be motivated to succeed.
Question: When has socialism, collectivism, or communism worked?
Answer: Never.
Question: When has freedom (known as capitalism in terms of economics) worked?
Answer: America!
